Miscellaneous

At the age of 17, he left high school to join the voluntary units in March 1991. As a minor, he was a Homeland War volunteer and a member of the National Guard Corps, 106th Brigade in June 1991. During the Homeland War, he was a member of the National Guard Corps, 106th and 130th Brigade; a member of the Special Police of the Ministry of the Interior, Military Police and the CAF 3rd Guard Brigade. From 1991 to 1995 he was engaged in battlefields in Croatia, from Eastern Slavonia to the Dubrovnik region. In August 1992 he participated in the operation conducted to liberate the Dubrovnik hinterland led by General Janko Bobetko. He also participated in Operation Maslenica. In August 1993 he was engaged in battlefields in Bosnia and Herzegovina. As a member of the Special Police of the Ministry of the Interior, from 1993 to 1995 he participated in operations on the Velebit Mountain, including Operation Flash and other operations conducted to liberate the territory of Western Slavonia. He has received Homeland War Commemorative Decoration for his participation in military and police Operation Flash, as well as other commendations and awards.
In 2011 he joined the political party called the Croatian Democratic Union and was elected president of the party’s County Committee in Osijek-Baranja County in March 2014. Two years later, he was unanimously elected to the same duty at the regular electoral assembly of the party’s County Committee in Osijek-Baranja County. In 2020 he was elected vice president of the Croatian Democratic Union.
As a member of the Croatian Parliament, he started a series of initiatives, such as changes to statistical regions, amendments to the Water Act in relation to sand and gravel exploatation, changes to legislative rules regarding wood pulp allocation and other community beneficial initiatives.
After he was elected the Osijek-Baranja County prefect in 2017, he submitted a request to suspend his term of office. In the first round of the 2021 local elections, he was elected the Osijek-Baranja County prefect again. A series of capital infrastructure projects were started and completed during his term as prefect of Osijek-Baranja County. He also placed a strong political emphasis on enhancing cooperation and support for Croatian people living abroad, particularly those in Vojvodina, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro.
During the tenth term of the Croatian Parliament, in 2020 he headed the party’s slate in fourth constituency, in which the Croatian Democration Union won eight parliamentary mandates for the first time in party history.
In November 2023, Ivan Anušić was appointed by Prime Minister Andrej Plenković as the new Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence of the Republic of Croatia.
During the 2024 parliamentary elections, he again headed the party’s slate in the 4th constituency and after the electoral win, continued his mandate as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence in the newly established government.

Based on the decision of the Government of the Republic of Croatia, State Secretary Zdravko Jakop of the Defence Ministry was authorised to head the Ministry of Defence starting on 11 November, 2023, until the appointment of a new defence minister.

Zdravko Jakop was born in 1967 in Višnjica, where he finished elementary school. He completed his secondary education at Maribor’s Technical School Centre. After graduating from the University of Zagreb’s Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences, he obtained a master’s degree in traffic engineering.

In 2011, he received his Master’s Degree in Political Science from the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Political Science, with a thesis on International Relations and Security. Mr. Jakop graduated from the Ban Josip Jelačić War College at the Croatian Defence Academy and completed the NATO Defense College in Rome, the highest level of training organised by NATO for senior officers.
On 31 October, 1991, he joined the ZNG’s 1st Brigade and actively participated in defending the sovereignty of the Republic of Croatia. He was a member of that brigade until February 12, 1993, when he transferred to the 7th Guards Brigade. His injuries in 1993 earned him the status of a Croatian war invalid.

He was awarded the Order of the Croatian Cross, the Order of the Croatian Trefoil, the Order of the Croatian Interlace, the Homeland War Memorial Medal, and the Homeland Gratitude Memorial Medal.

By the decision of the President of the Republic of Croatia in 2009, Mr. Jakop was promoted to the rank of Brigadier General.

Brigadier General Zdravko Jakop served as the Republic of Croatia’s Assistant Minister in the MoD since February 2016. During a closed-door part of the session held on 24 November, 2016, the Government of the Republic of Croatia decided to remove him from that role and simultaneously appoint him as State Secretary.

Ante Kotromanović was born on May 8, 1968, in Potravlje near Sinj.

At the beginning of the Homeland War he joined the Croatian Armed Forces and in the period from 1991 to 2002, when he retired with the rank of Colonel, he had been appointed to different duties – 1991 to 1992 Company Commander in the Special Forces, 1992 to 1993 Battalion Commander in the Sinj Training Centre, 1993 to 1996 Commander of Sinj Operations Group and Commander of the 126th Sinj Brigade, 1996 to 2001 Commander of the 4th Guard Brigade Split, and 2001 to 2002 Chief of Staff of the Military District Dubrovnik.

Having obtained the diploma in journalism from the Faculty of Political Science of the University of Zagreb in 2011, he has worked as a columnist in the daily newspaper Večernji list from 2004 to 2005. Other engagements throughout his civilian career include the position of the director of the demining company Zdrug from 2005 to 2006 and a member of the board of managers of Urbaniko company from 2006 to 2007. In 2007 he became a member of the Parliament and served as the Chairman of the Veterans Committee. In December, 2011, he was appointed Minister of Defence.

During his service in the Armed Forces he completed many specialist courses in Croatia and abroad, like the Antiterrorist Combat Course, Management Course, and the SSTR Course at George C. Marshall European Centre for Security Studies. He graduated from the Command and Staff College in 1993, and War College in 2000. He is currently enrolled on the postgraduate master studies in Business Management – MBA at the Faculty of Economics, University of Zagreb.

For his outstanding service in the Armed Forces Kotromanović has been decorated with numerous Croatian military decorations such as the Order of Duke Domagoj, Order of Nikola Subic Zrinski, Order of Count Jelacic, Medal for Exceptional Ventures, Memorial of Homeland War, and the Memorial of Homeland Gratitude.

He speaks English and is the author of a series of articles on the military, veterans, terrorism and military-political topics.

He is married and has two daughters. In his free time he enjoys spending time with his family and keeping fit.
