The Chief of the General Staff of the Croatian Armed Forces General Mirko Šundov attended the conference "The Croatia We Need – Two Years Later", organised by the  Večernji list daily paper in Zagreb on  4 March 2019.

The Conference featured talks by the President of the Republic of Croatia Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović, the Prime Minister Andrej Plenković and the Speaker of the Croatian Parliament Gordan Jandroković.

General Mirko Šundov was a panelist on national security alongside the Assistant to the Minister of the Interior Dragan Lozančić and the former defence minister Ante Kotromanović.

The panel was attended by the Assistant Minister for Defence Policy Petar Mihatov and students of the 21st generation of the War School "Ban Josip Jelačić" of the Croatian Defence Academy "Dr Franjo Tuđman".

The Chief of the General Staff emphasised that the operation of the Croatian Armed Forces was defined by the National Security Strategy, and that the Croatian Armed Forces and the Croatian police, the  firefighter association, the mountain rescue service and the Croatian Red Cross were recognised as important components of the national security system.

General reminded the exercises Kibernetički štit 18 ("Cyber Shield 18") and the firefighter exercise "Sigurnost" (Security) conducted within the Coordination for homeland security system in 2018, and commended the successfully completed Exercise "Velebit" – the most complex exercise of the Croatian Armed Forces, conducted in the four dimensions of warfare (land, sea, air and cyber space) which demonstrated their readiness to execute their fundamental  defensive mission.

General also underlined the increased defence budget which provided  better benefits to the members of the Croatian Armed Forces, as well as the option of continous duty contracts offered to the members as an important measure.

The panelists discussed the national security situation over the past two years, including the recently established national security system, the situation in the Croatian Armed Forces and their role in the system, the National Security Strategy, the present condition of the fighter aircraft component, migrations and emigration from Croatia and concluded that national security was of foremost importance.
