The meeting of US.- Adriatic Charter Defence Policy Directors

The Assistant Minister for Defence Policy Nikola Brzica on 15 April 2016 attended the US. –Adriatic Charter Defence Policy Directors meeting, alongside the representatives of the member nations (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, the United States) and  observer nations (Kosovo, Slovenia and Serbia).

The U.S- Adriatic Charter is a partner regional association focussed on enhancing the bilateral and multilateral relations between the member nations and the countries of southeast Europe with the goal to stability and security and full European and trans-Atlantic integration of southeast European countries.
The representatives of the ministries of defence and of foreign affairs of the member and observer nations,  chaired by the Republic of Croatia (chairing the Initiative in 2016) discussed the global and regional security challenges faced by the countries of the region, with the emphasis placed on terrorism and the growing problem of the returning foreign combatants from Syria and Iraq.
Director of the U.S. State Department’s Office of Peace Operations, Sanctions, and Counterterrorism, Raffi Gregorian pointed to the global dimension of the phenomenon and emphasised the importance of the regional co-operation in the prevention of radicalism, primarily through an upgraded information exchange system.
The participants addressed congratulations to Montenegro on the successfully completed process of accession to NATO which they underlined as an example to follow by other aspirant countries of the region, including the reforms to undertake in the interest of their own Euro-Atlantic integration.
