Minister Buljević attends NATO Summit
The Croatian Defence Minister, Josip Buljević was in the Croatian delegation attending the two-day NATO summit held in Warsaw, Poland, 8 – 9 July 2016.
In view of the growing uncertainties in the immediate surrounding of the Alliance (the Russian annexation of Crimea, the military build-up and terrorism in the Middle East and North Africa and the resulting influx of migrants to Europe), the heads of state and government have agreed that NATO with its principles of solidarity, unity and the transatlantic link constitutes the main pillar of Euro-Atlantic stability and security in a dynamic and progressively evolving security environment.
Discussing the collective defence and deterrence, the defence ministers reviewed practical steps to bolster deterrence and defence and sent a vehement message of resoluteness, solidarity and unity in the defence of the entirety of NATO territory.
Decisions on Enhanced Forward Presence at locations in the three Baltic states and in Poland, based on four battalion-sized battlegroups on rotational basis that can operate in concert with national forces, and the concept has been expanded to the southeast flank of the Alliance, in a similar engagement with Romania and Bulgaria to contribute to Alliance’s strengthened security through the implementation of special security measures. The Alliance’s deterrence and defence posture has been reinforced with a series of decisions on improved resilience of the member nations against hybrid and cyber threats and ballistic attacks coming from outside the Euro-Atlantic area.
At the meeting of the defence ministers in the Interoperability Platform format the Alliance and partner nations’ defence ministers endorsed a Roadmap 2016-2017, containing practical measures to guide the joint work on preparing for crisis management for the coming year and discussed future opportunities for NATO-partner cooperation to project stability.
The heads of state and government have signed the Declaration on Afghanistan, aimed to reaffirm the mutual commitment to long-term security and stability in Afghanistan beyond 2016 through a flexible regional approach.
