Bozinovic opened 7th World Congress on CBRN in Cavtat

Preventing terrorist groups to be able to acquire chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear weapons-weapons of mass destruction, is surely one of the most serious global security challenges of the 21st century.

This was said by the Defence Minister Davor Bozinovic when opening today, Monday, 11 April 2011, in Cavtat, the Seventh World Congress on CBRN-chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear threats and terrorism, which gathered about 200 eminent international scientists, biologists, chemists and representatives of numerous national and international organizations and institutions.
“Republic of Croatia is aware of CBRN threats and effects of using weapons of mass destruction so our efforts are directed in prevention. Although this threat is not direct for Croatia this danger can not be ignored”, Minister Bozinovic said. “In addition to the national level, our efforts in the prevention of such possible events include a firm cooperation at the international level with our allies and partners and through international organizations, since this threat does not recognize state borders”, Bozinovic said. The minister especially stressed the importance of cooperation at regional level which is aimed at strengthening of cooperation in terms of combating smuggling, and traffic control of multi-purpose products and goods.

“And this seventh world congress, which have been organized in Croatia since 1998, is one of the contributions dealing with the challenges of the potential use of weapons of mass destruction, and I hope that the congress through the workshops will contribute to efficient and effective responses on the possible threats of this type”, Bozinovic concluded.

At the opening of Congress Deputy Chief of Staff of the Croatian Armed Forces, Lieutenant General Slavko Baric talked about the role of the armed forces, and present were also addressed by the Director of the National Protection and Rescue Directorate Damir Trut, Director of International Cooperation of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons OPCW, Kalimi Mugambi Mworia and others.
