Training for search and rescue operations

The implementation of Training program for search and rescue operations of the Croatian Mountain Rescue Service (HGSS), signed on 17 May 2010 between the General Staff of the Croatian Armed Forces and the State Directorate for Protection and Rescue began on 1 October 2011.

The purpose of the program is to achieve through focused training of individuals and groups a high readiness teams for search and rescue operations (SAR) in the implementation of specific tasks with maximum safety, using helicopter and crew, within the legal safety limits. The aim of the implementation of joint training is to train, equip and maintain HGSS members for SAR operations, in favourable weather conditions during the day, over land and sea.

SAR team consists of a helicopter crew (captain of aircraft, co-pilot, two technicians), and two rescuers with the leader of a team or from two rescuers of whom one is a team leader. SAR team is intended for search and rescue on land and sea, and to assist in eliminating consequences of natural disasters and catastrophes. To implement these tasks HGSS members must be trained to prepare the ground for landing of helicopters and for guidance, entry and exit and the movement of people from a helicopter, leaving the hovering helicopter, get acquainted with “repelling” (abseil) and “Fast rope” technique, use the helicopter lift LPG-150 and SLG-300 (with and without carriers, with or without anti-rotation rope), etc.

15 members of the HGSS and three members of the helicopter crew conducted training in the airspace over Mosor Mountain on 1 October 2011.
