Croatian Navy Day marked
The formal ceremony marking the Croatian Navy Day was opened by lighting candles in the Navy Memorial Room in the Navy Headquarters in Split on 18 September 2014, in remembrance of members fallen in the Homeland War.
The Navy delegation also laid a wreath and lighted the candle on the grave of the first Navy Commander, late Admiral Sveto Letica-Barba at the Lovrinac Cemetery in Split and paid respects to Admiral Vid Stipetić in his native village of Dol in the island of Brač.
Deputy Commander of the Croatian Navy, Commodore Predrag Stipanović headed the Navy delegation that visited the „Juraj Bonaći“ School for Children with Special Needs in Split and handed in the air conditioners procured in a humanitarian assistance campaign conducted by the Navy. Navy members also cleaned up and refurbished the schoolyard.
On the ceremony held in the Navy headquarters, the meriting members were awarded commendations for the outstanding service and the trophies from the recent sport events organised in the Lora Navy Port.
Likewise, as the Croatian Navy Day is traditionally marked by harbouring of Navy vessels in the Makarska port, this year it was the Missile Gunboat “Vukovar“, arriving to Makarska 18 September 2014. The Croatian Navy representatives laid wreaths and lighted candles near the memorial plaque of the battle near Makarska and to the Monument to Croatian Defenders. The Gunboat sailed to the Makarska aquatorium, where a memorial wreath was laid at sea and the Navy respects paid to the fallen Croatian seamen.
