CAF take part in “Green Sweep” for the 3rd time
During the past weekend Croatia conducted its third environment protection campaign titled “Green Sweep – One Day for a Cleaner Environment”, joining the worldwide movement “Lets Do It – World Cleanup”, and the Croatian Armed Forces joined it too.
Some 100 members of the Croatian Armed Forces were cleaning up illegal dump site at several locations throughout the country (Vinkovci, Osijek, Požega, Karlovac, Ogulin, Knin), supported by the working machines, while the personnel and the helicopters of the Croatian Air Force and Air Defence were removing bulk waste from the «Paklenica» National Park and the Zadar surrounding.
On 26 April 2014 the President of the Republic and the Supreme Commander Ivo Josipović and the Chief of the General Staff of the Croatian Armed Forces, assisted by the CAF cadets, joined the action in Bizek, Zagreb.
President Josipović praised the symbolical value of the action in raising the awareness of the society in Croatia of the importance of environmental protection and wise waste management, while General Lovrić noted that it was the Croatian Armed Forces’ third participation in “Green Sweep” and announced the participation of divers of the Croatian Navy in a similar maritime action – the «Blue Sweep» scheduled on 10 and 11 May 2014.
General Lovrić emphasised that Croatian Armed Forces regularly joined the environmental actions – the Croatian Navy divers joined all Adriatic sea clean-up actions, and the Croatian Air Force and Air Defence’s Transport Helicopters Squadron used the Mi-8 MTVs to lift bulk waste from inaccessible sites.
The “Green Sweep – One Day for a Clean Environment” is the Croatian contribution to the «Let’s do it – World Cleanup» worldwide cleaning and public awareness-raising action, which includes cleaning of illegal dump sites. In 2013 it saw the participation by as many as 50,000 volunteers, including scouts, sport and other associations, and pupils, leading the organiser – the “Žmergo” Asociation, to expect comparable response this year too, with a large number of illegal dump sites cleaned up.
