Italian ship “Amerigo Vespucci” visits the Navy and Dubrovnik
As part of the bilateral military cooperation between the Croatian Navy and Armed Forces of the Italian Republic, Navy ship of the Italian Republic “Amerigo Vespucci” will be anchored in the port of Gruž in Dubrovnik, from 15 to 18 June 2012.
This is a school ship that is intended for the training of naval officers to maintain the tradition and for training of future officers on ships powered by sails.
“Amerigo Vespucci” training ship is 82.4 meters long, 15.6 meters wide and has draft of 7.5 meters. A crew is made of 278 officers, NCOs, and 126 sailors and naval school students. The hull is wide in order to achieve stability, and the ship was not designed to achieve high speed. Top speed under sail is up to 15 knots, and when sailing on engine about 10-11 knots. Trained crews can set all sails for 20 minutes. The base harbour is in the city of Livorno. Sailboat was built 1930 in the Castellammare di Stabia shipyard in Naples. It was launched on 22 February 1931, and commissioned in July of the same year.
The ship will be open to for visitors on Friday, June15, from 17.00 to 19.00 hours and on Saturday, June16, from 14.00 to 18.00 hours.
