Croatian Soldiers Abroad: Remembrance of Vukovar and Škabrnja Goes Beyond Croatia’s Borders, With Croatian Defenders in Our Thoughts
With deep respect and gratitude for all victims and Croatian defenders, members of the Croatian Armed Forces deployed worldwide in peacekeeping missions and operations marked the Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Homeland War and the Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Vukovar and Škabrnja.

Members of the UN Peacekeeping Mission: Gratitude and Remembrance Go Beyond Croatia’s Borders
Members of the Croatian Armed Forces serving in the UN peacekeeping mission UNMOGIP in India and Pakistan marked the Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Homeland War and the Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Vukovar and Škabrnja at the United Nations Field Station in Jammu, India, as well as at all other UN field stations in India and Pakistan.
Colonel Ivica Kordić, Commander of the Croatian Contingent and Head of the Jammu Field Station addressed the gathering, stating: “The remembrance of Vukovar and Škabrnja goes beyond national borders and remains alive in the hearts of all those who serve peace and justice.”
Members of the 43rd Croatian Contingent in KFOR Created a Candle Illustration of the Vukovar Water Tower
Members of the 43rd Croatian Contingent deployed to NATO’s Kosovo Force (KFOR) at the “Villaggio Italia” military camp in Peć, Republic of Kosovo, created a candle illustration of the Vukovar Water Tower and formed the names of Vukovar and Škabrnja in front of the central cross.
As part of the commemoration, they held a presentation on the heroic defence of Vukovar. The event was attended by service members of all nations operating within NATO’s Kosovo Force (KFOR).
Members of the Croatian Armed Forces in Hungary Honour Croatian Veterans
Members of the 7th Croatian Contingent of NATO’s Forward Land Forces Multinational Battle Group in Hungary marked the Day of Remembrance with a Mass and a commemoration to honour fallen Croatian defenders and civilian victims at Camp Croft in Veszprém, Hungary.
The Holy Mass was led by Military Chaplain Ivan Blaževac. Following the service, members of the contingent lit candles in tribute to those who laid down their lives for the freedom and independence of the Republic of Croatia.
Members of the Croatian contingent serving in NATO’s Multinational Division Command – Centre, led by Chief of Staff Brigadier General Dražen Ressler in Székesfehérvár, Hungary, laid wreaths and lit candles at the central cross of the “Szentlélek Katonai Temető” military cemetery in memory of the victims of Vukovar and Škabrnja.
Wreaths and candles were also laid by Deputy Mayor of Székesfehérvár Miklós Csaba Horváth, and by national military representatives of all countries participating in NATO’s Multinational Division Command – Centre, led by Commander Major General Tibor Kralík from Slovakia. The Holy Mass took place at the Church of St. Imre and was led by Croatian Army Chaplain Reverend Ivan Blaževac.
Members of the Croatian Contingent in Iraq Honour Vukovar and Škabrnja
Croatian soldiers deployed to the NATO mission Iraq marked the Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Vukovar and Škabrnja by lighting candles and gathering in prayer. Contingent Commander Colonel Andrija Mihanović addressed the contingent at the chapel of Camp Union III in Baghdad. Together, they honoured the memory of Croatian heroes.
Members of the 16th Croatian Contingent in Poland Expressed Their Support for Vukovar and Škabrnja
Members of the 16th Croatian Contingent deployed to NATO’s Forward Land Forces Multinational Battle Group Poland, stationed at the Bemowo Piskie Barracks, commemorated the Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Homeland War and the Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Vukovar and Škabrnja with dignity and gratitude.
They lit candles in memory of the victims and and expressed their support for Vukovar and Škabrnja. The Holy Mass was celebrated by a Polish chaplain in the Croatian language.
The victims of the Homeland War, Vukovar and Škabrnja, will forever unite members of the Croatian Armed Forces at home and abroad, bearing lasting witness to our commitment to defending the freedom and dignity of Croatia.
