Minister Kotromanović visits Iraq
The Croatian Defence Minister Ante Kotromanović from 1-4 October 2015 visited the Republic of Iraq with a delegation of the Ministry of Defence and the Armed Forces, upon the invitation of the Iraqi Defence Minister, Khaled Al Obeidi.
At the meeting the two ministers exchanged the views on the current security situation in Iraq and its neighbourhood, the growing security challenges embodied by the growing radicalism and terrorism with significant implications on both regional and global security as well as the future perspective for the bilateral co-operation, particularly in defence and security.
The Iraqi minister extended appreciation to the Croatian delegation for the visit and for showing their support and the comprehension for the complexity of the situation in the country.
The ministers highlighted the serious issue of foreign fighters and the migrant crisis. Minister Al Obeidi took the opportunity to express strong appreciation for the humane reception of refugees from Iraq in Croatia. .
Minister Kotromanović said Croatia as member of NATO and the EU supported the efforts of the Iraqi Government towards peace, stability and the democratic institution building. The only effective instrument against the ISIL and other terrorist organisations is to employ the policy based on religious and ethnical consensus, with the support from the international community, said the Minister, who also expressed concern over the tragic fighting in Iraq and the massive casualties and destruction. The complexity of the conflict in Iraq and the associated humanitarian catastrophe spill onto the security of the entire Middle East and the global security as well.
Croatia has been faced with the wave of migrants, but as a member of the Coalition, to its capacities, will continue to contribute to the efforts of the international community against ISIL and radicals and in curbing the the effects of their actions.
The ministers expressed commitment to a long-term partnership and co-operation in th areas of mutual interest. Minister Kotromanović commended the business projects run by the Croatian defence industry and other companies in the Iraqi market.
The Republic of Croatia, said the Minister, pledged the needed support to the Iraqi Security Forces in responding to the security challenges present in their country.
Minister Kotromanović also met with the Iraqi Chief of the General Staff, Otman Al Ganimy, as well as with the Iraqi Vice President, the Speaker of the Parliament, the Commander of the volunteer unitsm the Director General of Counter Terrorism Bureau and the representatives of the Iraqi Police. He also had a meeting with the commanders of the Coalition in Baghdad, engaged in training the Iraqi security forces.
