Prime Minister visits Ministry of Defence
The Prime Minister of the Republic of Croatia Andrej Plenković and the Finance Minister Zdravko Marić were welcomed to the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Croatia by the Deputy Prime Minister and the Defence Minister Damir Krstičević and his staff on 31 January 2017.
Minister Krstičević briefed the Prime Minister on the main activities and plans of the Ministry of Defence in the upcoming period and highlighted some of the priority projects. He also reported on the efforts made with the drafting on the new strategic documents – the National Security Strategy and the Act on the Homeland Security System. “Working systematically, step by step and through a number of workshops we shall soon complete drafting the documents“. The Minister also informed the Prime Minister on new initiatives proposed nad analysed in the Croatian Armed Forces – the introduction of basic military training course and the return to the locations that hosted the Armed Forces units earlier.
The Minister also underlined the importance of the awareness of new complex security threats, which necessitates the political, expert and public debate on the adoption of strategic documents and decisions affecting all citizens.
The Minister also reminded of the important decision on the future of the fighter aircraft component, requiring an all-national consensus and implying the responsibility of the future generations as well.
“The increased defence budget and the enhanced capabilities of the components of the security system need to serve the civilian community as well, as all of these underpin the success of the economy as the main determinant of the development“, said the Minister.
The Chief of the General Staff of the Croatian Armed Forces, General Mirko Šundov briefed the Prime Minister on the situation, the structure and geographical location of the units as well as on the current and planned activities of the Croatian Armed Forces, encompassing the participation in the peace missions and operations and in the scheduled military exercises as well as the assistance provided by the members of the Croatian Armed Forces to the civilian institutions and the local community, primaril through the emergency medical transportation, search-and-rescue actions and firefighting.
