“Puma” Battalion returns to Varaždin

The members of the 2nd Mechanised Brigade of the Mechanised Battalion “Pume” of the Guards Armoured MEchanised Brigade on 18 December 2018 arrived to Varaždin concluding its 7-day march, and were welcomed  bythe citizens.

In the last stage they were joined by the Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Damir Krstičević  and by the Chief of the General Staff of the Croatian Armed Forces General Mirko Šundov, and subsequently by  the State Secretary for Defence Zdravko Jakop, the Commander  of the Croatian Army Brigadier General Siniša Jurković, the Commander of the Guards Armoured Mechanised Brigade Colonel Mijo Validžić and the Commander of the 2nd Mechanised Battalion Major Zlatko Iživkić, who walked alongside the Minister and the Chief of the General Staff to the Memorial monument to the 7th Guards Brigade “Puma” in Varaždin, where they laid flowers for all the fallen members of the Brigade.

“I wish to congratulate you on the idea to walk back to Varaždin; it is an honour for me to join your victorious  column and this event”, said Minister Krstičević.

“Our commendations go to the Puma Battalion, the successor of the legendary 7th Guards Brigade who walked over 180 km in remembrance of the fallen fellow combatants in the Homeland War and to mark the return to Varaždin; I am proud and glad for them“, said the Minister.

“The successor of the legendary /th Brigade the Battalion “Puma” guards the values of the Homeland War; it is an obligation of all of us to guard the values too, to stand ready and to serve the people in the event of need. We have been warmly welcome to all towns where the units of the Croatian Armed Forces have returned to – Vukovar, Sinj, Ploče and Varaždin at Christmas”.
 
The Chief of the General Staff of the Croatian Armed Forces said the march was  dedicated to the fallen members of the wartime  7th Guards Brigade “Pume”.

“With this feat you demonstrated to be a deign bearedr of the title “Puma”; it was the best  way to mark the return of the Battalion home” said General Šundov.
The Mayor of Varaždin Ivan Čehok bid welcome to the Battalion “Puma” members back to “their town”.

The Deputy Commander of the 2nd Mechanised Battalion “Puma”, Captain Krunoslav Slavinec, who led the march and walked all stages expressed appreciation to the Ministry of Defence. 

The Battalion commenced their 184-km symbolic march to Varaždin on 12 December  2018 in Našice, covering seven stages – Našice – Kutovi, Kutovi – Slatina, Slatina – Virovitica, Virovitica – Đurđevac, Đurđevac – Koprivnica, Koprivnica – Ludbreg and Ludbreg – Varaždin, which were named after successful operations of the “Puma” Brigade during the Homeland War.
