“MARCOMET 2012” – meeting of navy commanders

Deputy Commander of the Croatian Navy Rear Admiral (LH) Tihomir Erceg attend the meeting of the NATO Mediterranean navy commanders – “MARCOMET 2012” which took place from 15 to 18 April 2012 in Rome, Italian Republic.

The meeting was organized by the Allied Maritime Command Naples, which Commander is Vice Admiral Rinaldo Veri (COM MC Naples), and the host of the meeting was the commander of the Italian Navy Fleet, Vice Admiral Giuseppe De Giorgi. First day of the meeting attendees were greeted by the Minister of Defence of the Italian Republic, Giampaolo di Paola.

The meeting was attended by 38 representatives from the navies from almost all continents, representatives of civil shipping organizations and representatives of international organizations that have developed relations and cooperation with NATO.

The main topic of the meeting was naval operation in the context of the new NATO Command Structure – maintenance, development and growth of relationships, while other topics were related to the development of military relations and relations with the commercial world, maritime situational awareness, strategic communications, naval operations and the fight against piracy.

Annual meetings of commanders and senior representatives of navies and other partner countries have been held regularly since 1997 in the Mediterranean NATO member states. Croatian Navy has been participating since 2003, and in 2010 it was the host country.
