28 May 28 1991 – beginning of the creation of the Croatian Army
Every year on 28 May, the Day of the Croatian Army is celebrated, in memory of the historic event from 1991, when the first professional military unit of the Republic of Croatia – the National Guard Corps (ZNG) – was formed into ranks on Kranjčevićeva Street in Zagreb. This date marks the beginning of the creation of the Croatian Army, the fundamental force in defence of the independence and territorial integrity of the Republic of Croatia.
The anniversary of the Croatian Army, the largest service of the Armed Forces, is an opportunity to pay tribute and gratitude to Croatian war veterans and their families, and to acknowledge all members of the Croatian Army who, with their professionalism, sacrifice and dedication, safeguard the security and sovereignty of the Republic of Croatia on a daily basis.
