Treaty on Croatia’s accession to the EU signed

By signing the Treaty of Accession into the European Union who on behalf of the Republic of Croatia was signed by President Ivo Josipovic and Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor and leaders of 27 EU countries, today, Friday, 9 December 2011, Croatia has changed the status from candidate country to the EU accession country.

Croatia will become a full member in a year and a half after the ratification of the agreement in Croatia and in the EU member states. The Agreement anticipates that this will be on 1 July 2013.

“We witness the historic act, the signing of the Accession Treaty is an act which by its importance for Croatian citizens stands next to the Croatian Parliament’s decision on independence”, President Ivo Josipovic said. “With Europe, Croatia is wealthier, and with Croatia Europe is richer”, said the Croatian president, stressing that our hard-won sovereignty Croatia does not give to the EU but only invest part of it in the Union.

The Accession Treaty was signed exactly on 10.33 hours by Croatian President Ivo Josipovic and Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor, which was followed by great applause of those statesmen present.
