USS “Harry Truman” arrives to Croatia

The aircraft carrier USS Harry Truman (CVN-75) on 5 December 2015 entered the Croatian territorial waters and has moored in the Brač Channel to support the theater security efforts by the U.S. and the Allies in the Middle East.

The carrier belongs to the 5th U.S Navy fleet, stationed in the Mediterranean.  It is staying in Croatia to 9 December.

The aircraft carrier “Harry S. Truman” is of the  Nimitz Class of carriers: its length is 333 m, the beam over  70 m, and the draught 11.7 m. It is powered by two Westinghouse nuclear reactors enabling the speed over 30 knots. Named after the U.S president Harry S. Truman, it is colloquially referred to as the “Lone Warrior”. It has a crew of 4922 (of whom  487 officers).
The Carrier’s commander is Captain Ryan Scholl (USN).

The HSTCSG – Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group also includes:

  • missile cruiser USS Anzio (CG 68)of the Ticonderoga Class,
  • the  USS Ramage destroyer (DDG 61) of the Arleigh Burke Class,
  •  the USS Gonzalez destroyer (DDG 66) of the Arleigh Burke Class,
  • the USS Bulkeley destroyer (DDG 84) of the Arleigh Burke Class
  • the USS Gravely destroyer (DDG 107)of the Arleigh Burke.

The missile cruiser USS Anzio is mooring in the Lora Navy Port, while four destroyers are dispersed in the Adriatic.
The Group’s armaments comprise the aircraft F/A – 18 Hornet and Superhornet fighter aircraft, the SH-60 Seahawk helicopters, and E-2 Hawkeye EWA. It employs the Sea Sparrow missiles and the Phalanx CIWS system.
