Waist Gunner Training ends at the Zemunik Air Base
The members of the Special Operations Battalion on Thursday 16 January 2014 completed the waist gunner training at the Mi-171 Sh helicopter, the first training event autonomously designed and conducted by the instructors of the 91st and 93rd Croatian Air Force and Air Defence Base.
The theory part was held in the Multi-purpose Helicopter Squadron at the 91st Air Base in Zagreb, while the practical training was carried out at the 93rd Air Base in Zemunik and at the „Crvena zemlja“ helicopter shooting range near Knin.
The training comprised operating the PKT machine gun from the side door of the helicopter, flight preparation, area surveillance skills, communication with the crew, relevant terminology, visual search and distance estimation, as well as directing the helicopter and signalling the obstacles.
The Croatian instructors and flight technicians were certified for the training by the instructors of the Minnesota National Guard in Septemer 2013, qualifying them to train both nationals and members of the partner countries.
