Workshop on crisis management

More MOD and CAF officials, headed by MOD State Secretary Pjer Simunovic and Croatian Military Academy Director Major General Mirko Sundov, from 31 August to 2 September, have been participating in workshops on crisis management, organized by the European Centre for Security Studies George C. Marshall.

A three-day workshop has been held in Zagreb’s Westin Hotel and it involved representatives of other governmental and nongovernmental organizations from Croatia and the countries from the region, whose work is related to crisis management. The aim of the workshop is the understanding of the complexity of crisis management, the importance of inter-agency approach to crisis management, as well as items related to the interdependent-and-effect management. Lecturers are experts from the U.S., associates of Marshall Centre, and the workshop consists of lectures and work in working groups, as well as of joint exercises.
State Secretary Simunovic, in a statement after opening the workshop, emphasized that “for the Government and the Croatian society as a whole is very important to have effective mechanisms in response to crises caused by natural disasters or human activity. These are floods, forest fires, industrial accidents, earthquakes, climate change, epidemics, weapons of mass destruction, etc. The role of the MOD and the Croatian Armed Forces, which have the appropriate means, is of great importance. These meetings help us to get acquainted with the latest global practices of crises management, particularly in matters of interdepartmental coordination, which is crucial given the complexity of possible threats. It is very good that here are representatives of countries from the region, since threats by definition are transborder”, Simunovic concluded.
