Agreement on U.S. Government donation signed in MOD
Defence Minister Davor Bozinovic and the United States Ambassador to Croatia James B. Foley signed today, 16 February 2011, the Agreement on the donation of military vehicles and military equipment of the United States Government to the Croatian Ministry of Defence and Croatian Armed Forces, worth about 5.52 million U.S. dollars. It is a donation of 13 armoured vehicles of the “HMMWV” type with equipment, spare parts and additional communications equipment.
After signing the Agreement, Minister Bozinovic in a media statement said that these types of vehicles have been already used by our troops in Afghanistan, and that these 13 vehicles would be used in the Republic of Croatia in the training of our members for participation in international peacekeeping missions. When thanking for the donation to the U.S. Ambassador Foley minister stressed that “the strategic partnership between the U.S. and Croatia has been more fruitful with every day, and this donation just confirms it. These vehicles will be used in the training centre in Pozega to train our members and by which we will raise the standard of training of our forces, but also simplify and cheapen the cost we had before, since for this part of training our soldiers have been trained outside Croatia”, Minister Bozinovic said.
Ambassador Foley stressed that it was a donation of military equipment for the training of members of the Croatian Armed Forces for participation in the ISAF mission in Afghanistan, but also that the equipment would be also used for the infantry taks, various military exercises, etc.
“The United States and Croatia are the strategic partners and NATO allies, and in that sense we want to help Croatia as a strategic partner in raising standards and in equipping the CAF”, Ambassador Foley said, adding that for this purpose in the last few years the Armed Forces received equipment worth over 15 million U.S. dollars. “I would also like to say that we highly value the professionalism and readiness of Croatian troops in which we have repeatedly assured through joint participation in international peacekeeping missions, participation in international military exercises, joint training, and through these activities and this contract once again we confirmed our strategic partnership”, Ambassador Foley concluded.
