Government adopts draft decisions on participation of CAF in NATO/EU operations

At its 40th session of  8 June  2017 the Government of the Republic of Croatia adopted the draft Decision on the Participation of the Members of the Croatian Armed Forces within NATO’s Enhanced Forward Presemce in the Republic of Lithuania and the Republic of Poland

within the Coalition forces operation “INHERENT RESOLVE“ in Kuwait and in the EU-led Operation “EUNAVFOR MED SOPHIA”, in accordance with the support pledged to the decision on enhanced presence of NATO in Lithuania, Estonia and Poland at the Warsaw Summit  in July 20016.
Upo n the adoption of the respective Decision by the Croatian Parliament up to 90 members of the Croatian Armed Forces  may take part in the activities within the enhanced Forward Presence, attached to the United States-led Battlegroup based in the Republic of Poland.
Likewise, upon the adoption of the Decision by the Croatian Parliament up to 200 members of the Croatian Armed Forces max be engaged  within the Germany-led Battlegroup based in the Republic of Lithuania, on rotational basis .
The members of the Croatian Armed Forces will take part in peacetime activities within the enhanced forward presence defined as a readiness attainment and maintenance mission  and support to the strengthened security of the Alliance and of its nations, and will take the  form of joint training events and improved interoperability of the participating nations. 
All measures taken within the enhanced forward presence are transparent, defensive  and in line with the international commitments .
The Republic of Croatia pledged support to NATO formally joining the Global Coalition to Counter ISIS at the meeting  of heads of state and government in Brussels on 25 May 2017. The decision entails Croatia’s joining and contributing to the efforts of the  Coalition though not in combat  operations.
Upon the adoption of the Decision of the Croatian Parliament, up to three members of the Croatian Armed Forces will be deployed to Kuwait in the course of 2017 and  2018 within the Coalition forces led by the U.S., possibly on a rotational basis.
As for the enagements in the operations led by the European Union, upon the Decision of the Croatian Parliament up to three members of the Croatian Armed Forces will take part in “EUNAVFOR MED SOPHIA” in the Southern Central  Mediterranean in the course of 2017 and 2018, thereby actively contributing to the development of crisis management capabilities of the European Union, particularly with regard to the illegal migrations in the Southern Central Mediterranean.
All decisions on the participation of the members of the Croatian Armed Forces in the activities led by NATO and the EU are promulgated by the Croatian Parliament.
