Defence Minister Vukelic visits town of Samobor
Defence Minister Branko Vukelic and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Regional Development, Forestry and Water Bozidar Pankretic visited today, on Tuesday, 19 October 2010, former “Taborec” barracks in Samobor, which, based on the decision of the Commission for State Property Management, was given to the City of Samobor.
At a press conference, after touring the “Taborec” barracks, Mayor of Samobor Kresimir Beljak said that this was the facility with ten buildings and area of 16 hectares.
The Mayor announced that City Administration, which was now located in the historic centre of Samobor, would soon move to this facility, and thus allow the development of tourism in Samobor. The Mayor also announced that Police Station would also move the next year to this facility and that the surrounding roads would be reconstructed in accordance with the city’s roads.
Defence Minister Vukelic congratulated Samobor city government in a well-thought-out project of conversion of the former barracks, adding that this is a unique example of how the city administration moved to a new location and thus revitalize this city area.
He recalled on the policy of the Croatian government for the non-perspective facilities of the Armed Forces to give them on the benefit of citizens or the economy and not to be empty.
He stressed that the Ministry of Defence also has benefits from it, since these empty facilities required no longer protection and no need to pay for utilities.
Deputy Prime Minister Pankretic said that some projects for the “Taborec” barracks refer to the county level and a financial assistance through the EU funds would be sought.
He thanked the Defence Minister Vukelic, noting that the Centre of the Ministry of Regional Development has recently moved into the former Headquarters of the Ministry of Defence on the Kresimir Square.
Minister Pankretic also supported plans to hand over non-perspective military facilities to local government and the economy, and many of these objects have been situated in the Zagreb and Zagrebacka County.
