Day of Remembrance for the victims of Vukovar

A Day of Remembrance for the victims of Vukovar 1991-2010 was commemorated today, November 18.

The central part of the commemoration began by gathering of veterans, families of killed and thousands more people who arrived from all over Croatia at the Vukovar hospital. A column of memory was then formed that set off through the streets of Vukovar to the Memorial Cemetery of victims of Homeland War.

In the column were the highest state officials, led by Croatian President Ivo Josipovic, Croatian Parliament Speaker Luka Bebic and Prime Minister Kosor. Delegation of Ministry of Defence and Armed Forces was led by Defence Minister Branko Vukelic and Chief of General Staff General Josip Lucic.

After the prayers for the victims of the war of the city of Vukovar, state and county delegations and veterans’ associations laid wreaths and lit candles.
Archbishop Splitsko-Makarski Msgr. Marin Barisic held a service for all the dead and missing.

“We are called to grow and nurture new generations in the original spirit of our veterans – in a spirit of responsibility and honesty, solidarity and humanity. Such a living and lasting monument of goodness and sacrifice for the common good will be our best way to commemorate the victims of Vukovar, and all Croatian defenders”, said in his homily Msgr. Barisic.
