Col. Garašić granted temporary rank of Brigadier General

The President of the Republic of Croatia as Supreme Commander of the Croatian Armed Forces signed on 2 April 2014 Decision on granting of temporary Brigadier General rank to Colonel Gordana Garašić, under his constitutional and legal authority and upon the proposal by the Defence Minister.

The interim rank has been granted in accordance with the Article 90. of the Act on Service in the Armed Forces of the Republic of Croatia (Official Gazzette 73/13), to entitle Brig Garašić exercise the one-star general duty of the ISAF HQ Gender Advisor. 

This is Brig. Gen. Garašić’s second term in Afghanistan, where she previously served a six-month term in 2010 as Head of the Personnel Department of the Regional Command North and Legal Advisor to the Commander of the Regional Command North.

The duty of the Gender Policy Advisor to the ISAF Commander entails co-operation with the authorities in Afghanistan, the UN Mission to Afghanistan, NGOs and officials in charge of gender equality and the women’s rights and comprises training, support and co-work with the local authorities aimed at integrating the gender issue into all aspects of life in the Afghan government and society.
Brig. Gen. Gordana Garašić graduated from the Faculty of Law of the University in Zagreb in 1994, and passed the bar exam in 2006. She commenced her officer career in the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Croatia (Citizenship Department) and continued in the Ministry of Defence’s Personnel Department.

Her various duties included the post of Military Advisor in the Mission of the Republic of Croatia to NATO in Brussels, Head of the Office to the Chief of the General Staff of the Croatian Armed Forces, Head of the Ongoing Operations Department of the General Staff’s Operations Centre and Assistant Defence Advisor to the President of the Republic.
Brig. Gen. Garašić completed a series of functional training courses in arms control, CIMIC, European Security and Defence Policy, Legal Advisor in NATO-led Operations and earned the Masters Degree from the „Dwight Eisenhower School for National Security amd Resource Strategy of the National Defense University in the U.S.A.

She was promoted to the rank of Captain in 1997 and to the rank of Major in 2000, followed by promotion to the rank of Lt.Colonel in 2004 and to the rank of Colonel in 2011 respectively and is holder of the Memorial Medal of Homeland’s Gratitude, the Order of the Croatian Three-Strand Pattern, the Operation Storm Memorial Medal and the NATO ISAF Medal, and of the Commendation by the Chief of the General Staff of the Croatian Armed Forces.
