Simunovic met the U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense
MOD State Secretary Pjer Simunovic, who participate in the Meeting of the SEDM Initiatives (South Eastern Europe Defence Ministerial) held in Antalya, Turkey, met on Monday, October 3, the U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Russia, Ukraine and Eurasia Celeste Wallander.
In conversation they exchanged views on regional cooperation within the SEDM initiative and the situation in the region, on the Croatian contribution to Afghanistan and other issues important for the two countries.
The previous successful regional cooperation within the SEDM, as well as current achievements and the achievements of SEDM, which today brings together NATO member states or states that are in some degree of involvement and cooperation with NATO was confirmed.
MOD State Secretary Simunovic and Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense Wallander stressed the importance of promoting dialogue and good neighbourly relations and constructive cooperation in the defence and security in the region and in this sense, the importance of inclusion of all countries that share those interests.
The conclusion is that SEDM, based on past achievements, should upgrade its goals and in this direction in particular plan activities that will enable greater availability of dedicated funds. Bearing in mind the circumstances of the general financial situation that has affected all parties, it was highlighted the need to avoid duplication of SEDM activities efforts with other organizations and regional initiatives.
The discussion was also on the inclusion of new states in SEEBRIG, multinational military component of SEDM, and its location.
Croatian contribution to ISAF was particularly emphasized and the excellent cooperation of countries of the Adriatic Charter in the School of Military Police in Afghanistan under the Croatian leadership.
