USS Mitscher visits Split and the Croatian Navy
The USS MITSCHER (DDG 57) Destroyer, belonging to the US Navy Sixth Fleet entered the Lora Navy Port, visiting Split and the Croatian Navy until 15 April.
The visit taking place as a bilateral Navy co-operation activity, and will include joint training activities and a joint exercise at sea (PASSEX) with the Croatian Navy vessels.
The destroyer has a 256-member crew, commanded by Navy Captain Frank Brandon.
The destroyer belongs to the Arleigh Burke class and has been in operational use in the U.S. Navy since 1994. Its displacement is 8558 tons, length 154 m, beam 20 m and draught 11 m, and the speed is 31 knots.
It is the other USS named in honour to Admiral Marc A. Mitscher (1887-1947), the commander of the carrier group from the World war II. Since 1994 (when it was transferred to the home port in Norfolk, Virginia) it has been assigned to missions the Mediterranean, the Persian Gulf, South America and it also took part in the exercises in the Carribeans and North Atlantic.
