Live Aerial Firefighting Demonstration in Zemunik
The agenda of the second day of the Aerial Firefighting Conference Europe (30 April) included a live aerial firefighting demonstration in the 93rd Air Base
engaging firefighter aircraft of the 93 Air Base in Zemunik, the Spanish and Italian CL-415 and the members of the National Intervention Unit.
The demonstration featured the aerial reconnaissance of fire sites and extinguishing of false fires by the Croatian aircraft (the Canadair CL-415, the wheeled Airtractor AT-802 and the amphibious Airtractor AT-802 Fireboss); the firemen of the National Intervention Unit conducted a simulated rope disembarkation from the Mi-8MTV onto an inaccessible terrain, followed by simulated extraction and rescuing of firefighters. The Spanish Canadair CL-215 T demonstrated reconnaissance and water releasing procedure , while the Italian Canadair exhibited the special environmental clean-up apability.
The Commander of the Firefighter Squadron of the Croatian Air Force and Air Defence, Major Davor Turković praised the Conference and the useful experience exchanged . „We have seen a confirmation of the good ongoing co-operation between the Croatian Ministry of Defence and the Armed Forces with the neighbouring countries and their firefighter forces“, said Major Turković.
The Chairman, Rear admiral Terry Loughran o the British Royal Navy, re-emphasised the importance of interoperability in view of the unpredictable location of fire sites. „Croatia has grown into a firefighting authority, with a well-designed organisation of aerial firefighting, as we have seen, and Major Turković heads a very professional team. The Conference goal was to educate the staff and incite interoperability“, stated RAdm Loughran.
The participants and visitors had also the opportunity to see the displayed aircraft o the 93rd Air Base (the Canadair CL-415, the Air Tractors AT -892-Fireboss amphibious two-seaters and the wheeled Air Tractor AT-802s, the Pilatus PC-9M and the Mi-8 MTV and the Bell-206 helicopters), as well as the Canadairs from Spain and Italy and a French Canadair.
