28th anniversary of 3rd Guards Brigade “Kune”

The 28th anniversary of the establishment of the 3rd Guards Brigade – “Kune” was marked in Slavonski Brod on 29 April 2019.

The marking ceremony was attended by the President’s Envoy and Advisor for Homeland War Veterans Ante Deur, by the Minister of Homeland War Veterans Tomo Medved as Envoy of the Prime Minister, by MP Pero Čosić as Envoy of the Speaker of the Croatian Parliament – by the State Secretary for Defence Tomislav Ivić as Envoy of the Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister, and also by the Chief of the General Staff of the Croatian Armed Forces General Mirko Šundov, by the Commander of the Croatian Army Major General Siniša Jurković, by Brigadier General Denis Tretinjak, by the Prefect of the Brod – Posavina County Danijel Marušić, by the Mayor of Slavonski Brod Mirko Duspara and the representatives of veterans’ associations.
The ceremony featured a mass in the chapel of St. Anne, and the laying of wreaths at the memorial monument.

On the occasion of its 28th anniversary a monument to the 3rd Guards Brigade was unveiled and a formal ceremony held in the Theatre & Concert Hall “Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić” in Slavonski Brod, featuring a presentation of the jubilary stamp dedicated to the Brigade “Kune”.

“We are indebted to the Kuna Brigade for the freedom for which its members fought selflessly, and set the example of the struggle and guarding of the homeland” said the State Secretary for Defence  Tomislav Ivić, who also stated that the guards brigades were the backbone of defence and liberating operations and their members made a huge sacrifice, and merit a lasting remembrance. 

The Chief of the General Staff underlined the importance of guarding the memory of the glorious Slavonian defenders. He expressed gratitude to all members of the Brigade and their families, saying The members of the 3rd Guards Brigade valorously defended the homeland and defied the aggressor” said General Šundov.

The chairman of the President of the Slavonski Brod Chapter of the Association of the Veterans of the 3rd Guards Brigade Major General (Ret.), Krešimir Šipoš, handed the two associations the donations collected in the charity 9th footsal tournament titled “We fought in war – we help in peace”. He reminded of the sacrifice of the members of the 3rd Guards Brigade, established in the early days of the Croatian struggle for freedom. 

The ceremony featured a performance by the Jazz Band of the Croatian Armed Forces with the vocalist Bruna Oberan.
